Stuck In A Lift With Meg
My novel has been out for a few weeks now and I was thinking about my characters and what they would think of our the current situation – how would she deal with isolation? I managed to have a brief chat with her going from the ground to the 14th floor of her building.
As I walk towards the elevator I see Meg, scarf wrapped round her head and sunglasses on in a swing dress – her timeless rockabilly attire is one of my favourite styles.
- What’s it like awakening in a new world? How have you adapted from before?
Well, it was a bit odd at first, everything looked familiar at first but so many things are completely different. The way shops work, the lifestyle we lead, although oddly working life is not much different to before, some are seemingly stuck in the same work/life loop that they always were.
- What’s your favourite thing about the new world?
Some differences have been brilliant, how we are free to do certain things like go to coffee shops and enjoy our guilty pleasures but being assigned your job when you arrive reminds me of every futuristic film I watched before I awoke.
- How would you feel if you had to self-isolate?
Well, I live alone but that doesn’t mean I’m not sociable, as long as I could still video chat with everyone I would be happy. The city itself is quite a lonely place so in many respects I am already isolating most of the time. A global pandemic in our world is so unlikely given how little proper human interaction most of us get.
- How did you meet Rachel?
Much like Kate – I met her at a cafe, I had just awoken and was lost and confused, I had nowhere to go and I didn’t understand what had happened to me, it was a confusing time for me.
- What do you think of Kate?
As you might imagine I was a little put out by her arrival, I always thought even though Rachel meets a lot of the newbies that I was somehow special, I realised after a while that this was not the case – the difference with Kate is that she is actually special. Although I’ve no idea what that means.
