Health misinformation on Facebook was viewed 3.8 billion times in the past year, peaking during the Covid-19 crisis, a report suggests. Activist group Avaaz, which carried out the research, avised Facebook posed a “major threat” to public health. Doctors added false claims about vaccines on the social network could limit the numbers prepared to have a Covid-19 jab if one became available. Facebook said the findings did “not reflect the steps we’ve taken”.
The fact is we have all spent too much time on our phones recently and need to take a step back and look at ourselves. Facebook plays a pivotal role in the spread of misinformation whether they want to admit it or not. It’s a bitter pill to swallow but one that is necessary. Content is so cleverly hidden most people don’t see the dual purposes of the millions of posts every day on Twitter and Facebook alike. Some spreading news of false cures/tests/preventatives giving people dangerous information which is likely to put them at risk and its disgraceful.
I urge you to be mindful of what you are reading and try not to get caught in the web of lies out there. I hear incidents of pictures of children appearing on paedophile websites, a heartbreaking time for any parent and a lesson to everyone to be more careful about their privacy settings and the way in which we use information on Facebook. We share our lives but its becoming rapidly obvious that we are now being taken advantage of without even knowing.
Misinformation is dangerous – please don’t just take the first thing you see as gospel and not seek a second opinion or comparison. Facebook is full of fabricated posts and adverts, what we see as some uplifting weight loss video is an advert for the slimming patches they used to lose the weight with! The same goes for COVID related posts, it is especially important to double-check anything you find, most information is confusing enough without wading through the fake news and posts but it has to be done as there is a lot of nonsense out there designed to trap us in some way.
You don’t have to stop using it simply just start being more mindful of what you absorb from it, the negative energy it can emit does not need to be encouraged into your life.
