And Here Come The Flying Fish

No this is not another bizarre turn in the events of 2020 – flying fish do actually exist. Proving not only the existence of evolution but also that if you put your mind to it you can achieve anything. Fish don’t fly I hear you cry! oh but they do! BBC Earth has an amazing video and there are many anglers with stories of catching them so when you feel like you can’t just remember that flying fish exist and if they can do it what excuse do you have? Much like a 92-year-old man I once met, still full of vim and vigour and at the time awaiting his letter from his doctor so he could go wing walking, at the time I was going through a darker place in my life and this conversation snapped me out of my fog for a moment, a 92-year-old wing walking? Really? Yes, and he has gone on to do a variety of other activities I wouldn’t even consider doing.

A flying fish is much like an aeroplane. The take-off process begins by gaining great velocity underwater, about 37 miles per hour. Angling upward towards the surface, the four-winged flying fish breaks the surface and begins to taxi by rapidly beating its tail while it is still beneath the surface. Taking to the air and sometimes reaching heights over 4 feet, gliding long distances up to 655 feet. Once it nears the surface again, it can flap its tail and taxi without fully returning to the water. Capable of continuing its flight in such a manner, flying fish have been recorded stretching out their flights with consecutive glides spanning distances up to 1,312 feet.

Life isn’t easy for these incredible fish. The danger comes from all angles as you can see in the video posted by BBC Earth, whether it’s above or below the surface.

The determination of this species to survive is akin to some peoples dedication to their chosen cause. Their commitment is largely survival-based but none the less mankind has become complacent in its existence there are plenty of us who just assume that things are a given. We in the first world consider running water, electrical power and other facilities to be necessities they are a luxury to many including to some in the so-called first world. For those in third world countries, this issue is one of infrastructure and sadly for those in the first world, it is simply due to lack of money. There shouldn’t ever be a situation where someone cannot afford the things we deem ‘basic necessities’ which is why some rely on food banks and the kindness of others whilst being judged by the bourgeoisie for ‘having too many children’ deemed irresponsible they don’t see why their taxes should go towards helping these people. Ironic when at the beginning of the pandemic the government were about to force everyone affected to live on statutory sick pay despite admitting they couldn’t live on it themselves, a sad situation to be in when they have so little regard for the people they are supposedly meant to be governing. It would be interesting to do an experiment and get them to live on benefits for 6 months without any of their income to support them to see how they manage. They might have some insight into how badly organised the system is and how it actively disadvantages people.

There was an article in the Financial Times a week or so ago (I won’t reference it but if you search for it you will find it) written by a woman living in an expensive part of London. She moans about how she had to reduce her spend on flowers and of course expand the children’s hugely expensive private tuition to more than two subjects and oh shock horror the Harrods Food hall was closed. This, of course, caused consternation to many on social platforms and I would assume probably caused a number of letters to the editor. I find it genuinely gob-smacking that you would complain about having to reduce your monthly fresh flower budget – shes a freelance finance writer it is not like she was furloughed from her job and couldn’t work – she could have picked up writing jobs from anywhere as a freelancer – it just proves how out of touch with reality the rich are. She claims to not understand why she felt so strongly at the time but it’s clear that white bourgeois privileged attitude is the cause of that mentality, ill behove you having to live on SSP madam or shock horror have your house repossessed for not being able to afford your mortgage.

That aside if the elite committed themselves to help others in the same way they serve themselves those who are in the disadvantaged category would most definitely not be disadvantaged anymore. Flying fish move in schools protecting each other whereas humans are seemingly getting further and further away from each other.
