Dulce de Leche – 5 Ways

I am ashamed to say that up until today I thought that Dulce de Leche was an Italian derived wonder and today I am informed it in fact hails from Latin America, I stand corrected, it is a treat I rarely allow myself but it is possibly one of the best inventions in the entire world. It is made by simply heating condensed milk until it produces a thick caramel/toffee like sauce which can be used for pretty much anything. For those without the inclination to make it yourselves its available in a number of supermarkets now – Merchant Gourmet being the brand name here.
Here are 5 ways to enjoy this culinary delight:

  1. Quick and Easy Banoffee Pie – Gizzy Erskines recipes are easy peasy and this one is a perfect example.
  2. Dulce de Leche Cake – this is a new recipe to me but it sounds like Letthebakingbegin.com are on to something here.
  3. Alfajores Biscuits – move over Oreo Alfajores are the best sandwiched biscuit in town. Shortbread like biscuity goodness smothered in dulce de leche and in this case a sprinkle of coconut. You are welcome.
  4. Cuatro Leches Cupcakes – thespruceeats.com alerted me to a new (to me anyway) cupcake feast your eyes on these bad-boys and enjoy, the meringue on top is an interesting addition.
  5. Last but not least a salted dulce de leche tart thank you to Goodie Mother for the recipe – make your life easy, buy the shortcrust pastry (blind bake before use) or if you can get some pre-made shortbread dough that would be even better and a jar of dulce de leche. Enjoy.

You can of course simply just dip bread sticks into the jar and eat it that way.

Stay safe in these crazy times.
