Missing Letter

She looked everywhere for it, all the drawers in the office, the unit on the landing even the bottom drawer in the kitchen. She had the letter yesterday, she was absolutely sure of it. Standing in the office she looked around trying to remember back to yesterday, she had even had it in her hand. Then she remembered the door bell had sounded, does this mean she put it down? She looked around the flat surfaces, a cursory glance but with little commitment, she thought again, she had gone almost straight to the door. She looked down at her feet, turned and walked out of the room. Walking down the stairs she saw nothing that looked like a dropped envelope (who even writes letters anyway?) the wooden floor was oddly similar to the colour she remembered the envelope to be, she ran her foot slowly along the skirting board just in case.
